thrift shop project

Sooner or later, everything will end up at a thrift store. I'm here to prove it.

08 May 2008

Goodwill, Somerville, MA.

Silkscreened Cow Art, $1.49.

This is for my friend Arthur. He will soon have a new room, and I hope he will like this. It reminded me of Ferdinand, even this is a lady cow and Ferdinand is a bull.

There have been a lot of changes at my local Goodwill in the past few months. It's been tidied a bit and nearly all the staff has changed. Ediba, where did you go? And, for the Davis Square faithful, don't you miss Wayne's excellent shopping soundtracks? A Goodwill run without Screamin' Jay Hawkins just isn't the same.

Ferdinand ranks right up there in one of my top two favorite books from my childhood.

She looks a lot like Ferdinand's mother who, as the book says, "was a cow." Did you know the Lennon sisters did a musical version of Ferdinand? You can see it on Youtube!

Fun! I totally agree with you on the thrift store theory. I know, it's terrible, but I think this whenever I go Christmas shopping: "Where is all this stuff going to end up?"

We know where!

Hi Kristin,
That is my neighborhood Goodwill too and I also miss Wayne and the old crew... and the old store setup and items. It doesn't seem to have as good stuff anymore. But I still have to keep checking, just in case...

Kristin-

My son is getting ready to move into his first apartment in Cambridge this weekend and my husband who has very limited (ie virtually zero)thrifting experience is going up there to help him set up.

I'd appreciate any thrifting suggestions for furniture/household items that you would be willling to share. They won't be looking for the rare or exotic--just basioc needs.

Thanks!

If you would be willing to share any recommendations for places to look for furniture/household items, I'd really appreciate it.

They won't be looking for anything unusual/rare/exotic---just the minimum to get by.

Thanks,

Very awesome cow - in a pop art kinda way.

I can also relate to feeling out of sorts when things change at the thrift store... What I love is when you can finally crack the one really gruff thrift store employee, and you learn that they are a huge sweetheart. I'm always very kind to thrift store staff: they have a tough job sorting all of our junk!
